Garden Art

Garden art is only possible because landscapes provide splendid.

The natural landscape cannot be replicated in an indoor installation. My tree jewelry needs to adorn trees in order to have its impact. Garden totems and planters light up patios and in gardens without 'stealing the show.' Some of my garden art, such as the totems, have big impact for taking such minimal ground space; they are stunning in groups.

Primitiva Pottery began the garden art line in the 1970s as planters.  Primitiva Pottery and Tile's garden art line has grown to include quite elaborate multipiece garden totems, bamboo, cactus, tree jewelry, bird spas, bird baths, and planters. Though unique, all of them have familiar personalities.

I use terracotta clay for my planters and tall totems with layers of porcelain clay laminated in thin coats to produce vivid colors to contrast with the terracotta. My other work uses white stoneware clay that is fairly smooth to very textured to help produce the final glaze effects that make the pieces unique. Their heavily carved, sculpted, and textured surfaces beg the passerby to interact and touch them.

All of these pieces are winter hardy in westcoast climates--or gardening zones 7 to 10.
